June 17, 2015, at 8:45 pm, a slender built 88-year-old black woman walks gingerly across the street to the steps of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Without help, and under a dark sky, the entry light serves as her beacon to navigate the stone stairs of the building.

She lets out a long sigh thanking God for the strength to make it to her planned destiny. Then, she slowly and quietly opens the doors to the nave of the church.

She is careful not to interrupt the weekly bible class some of her friends attend. She moves to a quiet corner to unload the tremendous weight she carries daily through prayer.

She places her tattered bible on her lap, supported by slender, aged legs. “Lord, I speak to you daily for your direction and advice. My heart and soul are tired from the pain and unjust practices my family and people endure every minute of every day in this country. There is no need to list the inequalities because, my God, you know them well. For all 82 of my 88 years here in Charleston and the pounding memory of my fathers’ death at the hands of a mob. (They lynched him because he proudly wore his military uniform downtown.) You know I cried at the low-lying fruit my father had become that day and have since been asking you, Lord, for justice. Just like the generations before me have faithfully prayed for over 400 years.

Suddenly the quiet calm of her prayers for help is interrupted by the click of a gun ready to fire. She turns to look over her right shoulder to witness a young man gun down 9 of her church family.

After generations of unwavering faith, . . . He Answers.
